Friday, July 10

Today we spent the day with Frank Craig.  He came up from Yorktown and showed us all around Chincoteague where he and Suzanne had spent their time here.  We went to Assateague Island again (twice), Tom's Cove RV Resort (where he had had his trailer), around the north end of the island (which we hadn't been to before), out to lunch at Don's Restaurant, and shopping on Main Street.  Is was a great day!

The first time we went to Assateague, we didn't see any ponies.  But we did visit the lighthouse and walked to the top.  Fantastic views from up there!  Also went down to the ocean - lots of people there for 9:30 in the morning!

The Wildlife Trail that was closed yesterday, was still closed today until noon, so we went back into town and Frank showed us around the island - ending up at Tom's Cove RV Park where he and Suzanne used to keep their motorhome and then bought a trailer that stayed there permanently.  And wouldn't you know?  We saw ponies!!!  They were on this little island in the channel at low tide and the sightseeing boat from town had taken tourists out to see them.  Amazing!

We ended up lunching at Don's Restaurant and then did a little shopping on Main Street.  Then we went back to Assateague and on our way to the Wildlife Loop - saw yet another herd (smaller this time) of ponies!

We walked the wildlife loop and didn't see ANY wildlife, stopped to see the same herd again on the way back (caught a picture of a baby!), drove the woodland loop again - still no ponies in that section of the park, and then decided we'd pretty much seen it all and ended up back at camp.

Frank hang out with us until early evening and then had to head back home - and we went out for ice cream.

Onward tomorrow to Washington DC!
